Root canal treatment or endodontic treatment is for teeth that have been badly damaged due to decay, injury, gum disease, breaking down of a filling or crown or a deep cavity. This causes infection of the pulp and if left untreated, can cause severe pain and swelling.
To save the tooth from extraction, each canal within the tooth is cleaned, enlarged and then filled. This may need several visits to the dentist and in most cases, will need a crown to strengthen and protect the tooth. The only alternative method to remove infection is to extract the tooth. Tooth loss may lead to other complex problems like shifting of adjoining teeth, gum disease, food trap and jaw joint issues.
