During sleep, the muscles of the throat can relax too much causing obstruction of the airway which results in snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
Obstructive sleep apnoea may lead to heart disease, an increase in blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks. Assessment in a sleep clinic is crucial for the diagnosis of OSA.
Snoring & obstructive sleep apnoea may be treated using oral appliances, Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or surgery. The oral appliance brings the lower jaw forward, thereby keeping the airway open and reduces airway obstruction and snoring; and increases the chances of a better nights sleep.
Oral appliances or Mandibular advancement splintsare a good treatment option for mild to moderate cases. These splints are custom made at our surgery to give you the best treatment outcome.
